The organization of the European car of the year announced the seven finalists of the 2019 edition in a Twitter post. Not surprisingly, only one of them is from a non-European brand. The seven finalists are listed in alphabetical order: Alpine A110, Citroen C5 Aircross, Ford Focus, Jaguar I-Pace, Kia Ceed, Mercedes-Benz Class A and Peugeot 508. The good news for the PSA group is that Citroën and Peugeot are in the list.
The candidates were selected from a list of 38 competitors announced earlier this year. Among them, the Aston Martin Vantage, the Audi A6, the BMW 3 Series, the Dacia Duster, the Honda CR-V, the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Lamborghini Urus, the Volkswagen Touareg and the Suzuki Jimny.
Most of the candidates were tested by the jury shortly before the Paris Show at an event held in Denmark the last week of October. The jury is composed of journalists from 18 different countries. After the evaluations, the choice will be made in the coming months and the announcement of the winner will be made at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019.
As a reminder, the Volvo XC40 was named European car of the year 2018, announced at the March Swiss event. The smallest SUV of the Swedish brand has outperformed models such as the SEAT Ibiza and BMW 5 Series. Some of the finalists of the European Award will also participate in the world edition of the car of the year 2019. A total 85 journalists will test the candidates in the coming months and the winner will be announced in April at the New York Hall.
