The Sintra City Council seized for the first time, through the municipal police, a vehicle whose owner was preparing to deposit garbage and debris on public roads – considered an environmental offense illegal dumping. The authorities were already monitoring the car a few hours ago, until they decided to approach the place. When they did, the two suspects fled. The vehicle was finally seized with some of the trash, and until now the authorities are trying to identify the owners.
Basílio Horta, president of the municipality of Sintra, said that "the enhancement of the public space is a challenge that the municipality of Sintra assumes in its entirety, but requires the contribution of all citizens".
The mayor also said that "with all the waste collection and disposal services available" it is not acceptable that some may question the "environment of the municipality.
"In order to create a sustainable environment and a territory that sees itself as a living space and the dynamics of communities and the economy, we need the cooperation of all .This is not a tolerable behavior detrimental to our quality of life and the image of Sintra, "he said.
The Mayor of Sintra told the government that in recent years much effort has been made "to improve the response capacity of garbage collection services". He added that, despite the fact that the waste production of the population has increased, it is necessary, in addition to "strengthening the reduction and separation of waste", that citizens adopt "appropriate behavior for the benefit of all". .
"The trash is everybody's problem" and it's not acceptable that some people still do not contribute to the "quality of public space", he said.
