According to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, consuming 30 grams of protein 30 minutes before bedtime appears to have a positive effect on muscle quality, metabolism and overall health. And, better yet, no gain in body fat.

The study was conducted by Michael Ormsbee, a visiting professor of nutrition, diet and exercise at Florida State University, and Samangha Leyh, a graduate student at the university.

The participants in the study were young women in their twenties. They ate samples of cottage cheese for 30 to 60 minutes before going to bed.

Scientists said it was one of the first nutrition studies in which participants were consuming a complete food instead of a protein shake or a type of supplement.

Ormsbee commented that prior to the study, people thought that whole foods would behave like supplements and this was not the case in this study. In the future, the researcher will examine other types of foods to find the best nighttime foods for muscle recovery.
