Luís Mendonca, caretaker of the Pinheiro da Cruz chain, Grândola, died on Wednesday while he was on duty in a watchtower.
At around 30, the caretaker had less than a year of work.
The body was discovered by the colleague who was about to surrender.
The prison services have already announced an investigation into what could be a suicide with a firearm.
