On Tuesday, at least 8,000 barrels of oil were dumped in the Amazon region of Peru (as a result of the attack on a pipeline), Petroperu oil and gas company president James Atkins said Thursday.
The official told the official Andina news agency that "the ecological damage is considerable and irreparable" because the oil has reached the Mayuriaga River and must reach the Amazon River.
The spill occurred about 500 meters from the community of Mayuriaga, located in the Amazon region of Loreto, and had people dissatisfied with the results of the municipal elections.
In addition, about two weeks ago, the attackers abducted 20 workers from a service station located in the same area. After leaving, they left a written message in which they threatened to damage the pipeline if the election result was not canceled, Atkins said.
He added that after the threat, Petroperu had suspended the pumping in the pipeline, but that the pipelines and pipelines were still under pressure at the time they were cut.
"I think the time has come to implement the law because it should be the same for all Peruvians. The pipeline is considered a vital national asset and by law anyone who damages it should suffer a prison sentence of six to ten years, "he said.
The pipeline in which the attack occurred carries oil extracted from the Peruvian jungle to the port terminal of Bayóvar, in the Pacific Ocean, through 1,106 kilometers. of tubes crossing the Amazon and the Andes.
