Dog attacks, organized in packs, seem more and more frequent in the area of Aveiro. According to a report released Thursday by the Jornal de Notícias, the animals will have attacked residents and tourists, and the GNR, the parish council and the Aveiro town hall are seeking a solution. The town hall has already given an indication on the collection of animals.
According to reports from some residents, groups of stray dogs would frequent the parish, and street pack attacks would increase. One of these testimonials is that of a resident who claims to have been surrounded by a bag on the beach of São Jacinto, Aveiro, while strolling. Trying to scare the group of 13 dogs with a stick in his hand, he was "trapped". "I had to go to the sea not to be attacked," he recalls.
The episode was well over and the resident managed to get to the bike to leave the premises. Already, a foreign tourist was seen "with his pants broken and blood flowing from his legs" because he had been attacked by dogs, he said. This is one of the many reports that have been heard in the region. The dogs "look like wolves and are scared," said a local merchant.
The parish council of São Jacinto has already identified two packs in Aveiro and sought to "find a solution with the help of the GNR and the chamber". Its president, António Aguiar, said a month ago, "a French woman on vacation was severely bitten by a dog and had to go to the hospital". This was the first of six situations reported to the ward council. "People are scared, some have already thrown themselves into the sea to escape, others have stopped walking at night or going out alone."
The municipal council of Aveiro will therefore prepare the collection of animals, which will be "placed in their own centers," confirmed the mayor of the municipality, Ribau Esteves, JN. This collection operation will be coordinated between the municipality and the Department of Nature Protection and GNR, according to the Chamber.
In September of this year, Lusa's new advances signaled the registration of more than 740 dog attacks on the road since 2016, according to GNR at the time.
