Agriculture: Vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease extended until 10 December

The Paraná Agricultural Defense Agency (Adapar) has extended the November 2018 phase of the FMD vaccination campaign until December 10th. Portaria No. 300 of 2018, which informs of the extension of the mandate, was published Thursday (29).

The main reason for this was the reduction in the stock of resale vaccine by the states, which could compromise the vaccination rate. The Ministry of Agriculture announced that the shipment of 8 081 730 doses to Paraná would have been insufficient to supplement the existing stock in that state, which is insufficient for compulsory vaccination, estimated at 9.2 million of cattle.

At the November campaign, which started on the 1st, vaccination and proof of cattle of all ages are mandatory. Producers who do not regularize the situation within the given time are warned and are subject to the sanctions provided by law.

The main reason for the extension of the term was the modification of the formulation of the vaccine, which, from trivalent, with the viruses A, O and C, became bivalent, only with the strains of the viruses A and O, at the dose of 5 ml.

In the next campaigns throughout Brazil the same bivalent vaccine will be used, however at a dose of 2 ml. "This change has made authorized dealers more conservative in terms of storage, as vaccines in this formulation could not be sold in future campaigns," says Inacio Kroetz, CEO of Adapar.

To date, 71% of animals have already been vaccinated. Kroetz says the deadline will allow dealers to buy more vaccines of the correct formulation for this campaign and provide them to growers.

When buying the vaccine from authorized dealers, the producer gets the purchase invoice and instructions to prove the vaccination, which can be done when resold even in Adapar service centers or via the Internet at www.adapar.pr. gov.br. It is also important to make the cadastral update mandatory.

Adapar has 135 units in the state and 240 municipal offices responsible for supervision. This work is done permanently in Paraná and intensified during the campaign periods.

In the first stage, in May, vaccination was only required for animals under 24 months of age. 4.2 million heads were vaccinated, which met Adapar's expectations. The next step will be in May 2019.

STATUS – Today, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) recognizes Paraná internationally as a FMD free zone, with vaccination. The objective of the state of Paraná (government and private sector) is to obtain recognition of the FMD free zone without vaccination. With a differentiated health status, it should attract investment and the opening of national and international markets, with greater added value to the product of Paraná. In August, the state government officially asked the map to include the block I list, including Acre, Rondônia and parts of Amazonas and Mato Grosso, with suspension of vaccination from May 2019 and international recognition in May. The last foot-and-mouth disease recorded in that state dates from 2005 and was cured in 2006.
