Maria Jose Guerreiro, at a press conference to present the program "Sentidos de Viana" 2018/2019, for an investment of 120,000 euros and nearly a hundred initiatives, explained that the decision was made for "environmental" reasons.
"We have to think from an environmental point of view, it's a natural heritage that we have in our city as well as others we need to deal with," he said.
From a height of over 50 meters, Araucaria excelsa has been illuminated for over 20 years by thousands of points of light. It is visible throughout the city, in a perimeter of several kilometers.
The installation of the decoration was done manually, despite the weaknesses already presented by the copy.
Maria Jose Guerreiro also indicated that, as last year, during the last Christmas lights lighting in the Araucaria excelsa, an artificial Christmas tree will be installed in Praça da Liberdade.
The official said that this year the municipality will invest 60,000 euros, plus 10,000 euros compared to last year, in the Christmas lighting of 20 arteries of the historic center. The Christmas lights will be on December 7th from 8:30 pm.
In the "Sentidos de Viana" program, Maria José Guerreiro highlighted, among other things, the making, for the second time, of a giant cake-king, bigger than last year, assembled outside, of original form. and with 40 meters perimeter.
Revealed the bet on a larger cake, made by the county pastry, whose number will reveal, will determine the change of venue, this year the Republic Square, ex-libris of the city, December 8, of 16 hours.
Maria Jose Guerreiro also highlighted, on December 31, between 22 and 24 hours, the concert of the year, with Marta Ren at the cultural center of the city, followed by a fireworks session .
Previously, the evening of New Year's Eve included the entertainment, the night in theaters, guaranteed by several bars in the city, which will not be organized this year, according to Maria José Guerreiro, by "lack of availability" of entrepreneurs from institutions nightlife.
On the eve of this Christmas, the tradition will come to be realized in the center of Viana do Castelo with the banana and the chalice of Moscatel. The custom was practiced for 60 years by the house Riolanda, located in this area of the city, closed in the meantime by the death of the owner.
Despite the designation Riolanda house, the designation of Bananeiro was attributed to the fact that for many years, the best bananas in the city have been marketed. Inside, the store had a small counter where drinks were served, including Muscat.

The initiatives, which will take place from 1 December to 4 January 2018, aim to "disseminate what the county has to offer" in the most diverse regions and contribute to the revitalization of the local economy.
