Health units expand HIV rapid test offer in Manaus

Manaus – The City of Manaus, through the Municipal Health Secretariat (Semsa), announced that it is scaling up the provision of rapid HIV testing in 147 basic health units (UBS) offering this service, in addition to work with the Mobile Unit for Counseling and Rapid Testing for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B and C. This initiative is part of the Red December campaign.

According to the Municipal Secretary of Health, Marcelo Magaldi, Red December is a global campaign to encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles, to ensure prevention, such as the use of condoms in relationships and the importance of adherence to treatment for patients with HIV.

"With this, Semsa has intensified its offering by offering the rapid test so that the population has access to early diagnosis and can thus initiate treatment as soon as possible, thus ensuring a better quality of life for the patient," says Marcelo Magaldi.

The mobile unit is a suitable micro-bus with an air-conditioned internal environment and spaces for pre-test counseling, testing and post-test counseling. The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes to define the diagnosis.

This action was organized by the Disa Disease District in the south, which provided 300 rapid tests and distributed condoms. "The use of the mobile unit is a strategic way to increase opportunities for the population to access HIV diagnosis by offering service in places like Matriz Square, where a large number of people are traveling and work, and many still do not have the technician in charge of Disa Sul's sexually transmitted infections (STI / AIDS) program, social worker Ivamar Moreira da Silva.

Semsa has also scheduled the offer of quick tests with the mobile unit on Sunday (9) from 8 am to noon on the promenade of the tourist complex of Ponta Negra, West Zone, as part of an event promoted by Uninorte, with the support of Disa Oeste.

The mobile unit will still be offering the quick test next Thursday at 8pm, from 8am to 11am, at the Maria Ferreira da Silva Municipal School, next to the Producer roundabout, the Jorge Teixeira district, on the east side, when There will be a walk, educational material on the prevention of STIs / AIDS and the distribution of condoms to the population.

Cases

Between January and November of this year, 1,185 new HIV cases were reported among residents of Manaus. Of the total reported cases, 923 were men (77.90%) and 262 women (22.10%). The highest prevalence was in the age groups 15 to 49 years old.
