The situation surprised everyone. On Monday, the Prime Minister was speaking on the occasion of the 46th anniversary of the Socialist Party (PS) when Francisco Pedro, a 32-year-old activist, stormed the scene and hijacked the microphone. Antonio Costa for it's address to the public. protest against the extension of Portela airport and against the construction of the new airport of Montijo. He could not, however, read the newspaper he was carrying – entitled "More Aircraft, I'm Joking!" – taken by two security guards who accompanied Antonio Costa after 17 seconds and who belong to the PSP's Personal Security Corps – according to the PS, there were no private security guards at the scene.
Activism aside, the security breach that the activists took advantage of could have resulted in an episode with more serious contours, even because the SOL knew that on Monday the party did not want to control the entries – and that day, there were even ministers who gave up personal security, like Augusto Santos Silva, Foreign Affairs.
According to a source that did not want to be identified, the different political forces, in the events of their party, attach little importance to security measures. Another source, who also requested anonymity, confirms: the logic differs from that applied in official events, when the personal security body of the PSP conducts the field assessment, control that enters and who leaves, knows the face of the present and determines what must be done.
In the case of parties, there is great resistance, especially during the election campaign, when politicians want to get closer to people. Therefore, at events organized by the parties themselves, PSP's personal security body does not know who is going in or who will be present. On Monday, the PS anniversary was organized by the party and António Costa spoke as secretary general and not as prime minister. In a hypothetical situation, if the activist had bad intentions towards the Prime Minister, in the same way that he invaded the stage and managed to turn the microphone away without anyone stopping, he had time to do it.
However, one source assures that the reaction of the PSP was normal and that the police did not take long to act. What has happened, he thinks, is that security has determined that the activist who spoke may be a sound or assistance technician. He therefore rejects any question about the ability of security to do its job: "The PSP knows what it must do, but the support is difficult, especially for public figures who do not have a culture of security ", did he declare.
António Costa and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa are, according to the same source, the maximum examples of "boycotting" security measures and security guards themselves: this justifies the lack of access control in the country. PS party, where it was not even necessary. no matter what type, for example, of who's called journalist.
The importance of safety
After the episode that put the security of the Prime Minister on the agenda, a question was asked about the real importance of the security of the greatest personalities of the state. One of the sources evoked by SOL recalls situations in which security was indispensable. In fact, António Costa has already had at least one of these situations: in a São João do Porto, the personal security of the Prime Minister prevented the executive director from being hit by bottles at the head while he went through the crowd. Without the current security, António Costa would certainly have been touched. The same source also said that there had already been several occasions when security had to carry out difficult interventions before the injunctions of the prime minister against BES injured.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also had his share of situations in which security was decisive. However, the President of the Republic blatantly obstructs the work of security, because of its erratic agenda, which does not always facilitate the planning of security.
Cases in which the PSP was decisive
The importance of security is however evident in other personalities. When Brazilian activist Jean Wyllis came to Portugal last February to participate in a series of lectures, the personal safety of the PSP played a key role in preventing Wyllis from being hit with a bottle of head when One of his lectures. .
Another of the most famous personal security interventions was the arrival in Portugal of Pope John Paul II on May 12, 1982. The Spanish priest Juan Maria Fernandez y Krohn used a knife to kill the pope when TVs around the world have transmitted live images. Security acted quickly, arresting the person responsible and avoiding the worst.
