The burden of responsibility is heavy on the shoulders (well defined) of the 5th generation of Renault Clio. A name we first met in 1990 and is the best-selling diamond brand – over 15 million units sold over four generations.
The leader in the European sales segment and the absolute leader in Portugal, it is up to the new Renault Clio to maintain and even reinforce this reign, especially as this year, some of the heavyweights of the segment will also introduce new generations, such as the Opel Corsa and, above all, fellow Peugeot 208.
Renault chose Portugal for the international presentation of the new Clio, based in Évora, Alentejo. The opportunity to test "at home" and first hand one of the most important models of the brand Boulogne-Billancourt.

Renault Clio Intens
Despite the more mature visual evolution that some may accuse of being shy – looking like a simple restyling – the 5th generation of the Renault Clio is indeed 100% new, allowing to benefit from the advantages of a new platform, the CMF-B, more rigid, lighter of 50 kg and compatible with increasing levels of electrification.
The use of CMF-B has changed the size and proportions of the new Clio. This is a counter-chain shorter 14 mm and 30 mm shorter than its predecessor. Despite this, the internal quotas have improved, but, as Diogo notes, the space available in the rear seats remains somewhat compromised, one of the criticisms that already targeted the current generation.
The capacity of the luggage compartment has also increased, rivaling those of the upper segment, by presenting 391 l… in the case of a gasoline engine. In the case of diesel engines, because of the additional Ad-Blue tank, the capacity drops to 366 l, which represents excellent value for the segment.
Engine News
Speaking of powertrains, there is also news, starting with the new three-cylinder of 1000 cm3 with 100 hp turbocharger – engine we originally knew driving the new Nissan Micra -; the first of the Clio 1.3 liter and 130 hp, an engine already known at other Renault, Nissan and … Mercedes-Benz Class A. In the field of diesel, the faithful services of 1.5 dCi, now 85 hp, are maintained.
Still in the field of engines, the main novelty is the unprecedented debut of a hybrid version called E-Tech, which combines a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with two electric motors and 1.2 kWh batteries.

The interior surprises more than the outside
Back inside, this is where we notice the biggest differences between the 5th generation of the Renault Clio and its predecessor.
Diogo leads us to discover it by highlighting the good quality of the materials, the new digital quadrant (7 "or 10") and the best infotainment system Easy Link – three versions available, 7 "touch screen with or without system navigation and 9.3 "with navigation system. There is no stop here, with the presence of several storage spaces totaling a capacity of 26 l (reference value for the segment, explains Renault).
The driving position is also superior to that of the previous generation, contributing, among other things, to the approach of the steering wheel gearbox handle, and in the raised position.

R.S. Line, the sportiest line of equipment
In addition to the manual transmission 1.0 TCe 100 hp with manual gearbox, Diogo had the opportunity to experience what is already the most powerful version of the new 130-liter Clio, coupled with a Seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (EDC7), and also on the RS Line equipment, which replaces the old GT Line.
Renault Clio R.S. Line
It shares with the TCe version of 100 hp the good dynamic behavior, with a precise front, a direction of communication and also a moderate consumption.
The line level R.S. adds a more sporty style, visible on bumpers and wheels with specific design; and also inside, with the addition of leather seats, sport steering wheel, red dots and some surfaces imitating carbon fiber.
The new Renault Clio will start selling in September – the prices have not yet been announced – and to find out more about the new darling, join Diogo in one of our videos:
