There are more than 8 million books sold in about 40 countries. Bob and his owner, James Bowen, a former addict forced to live on the street a good part of his life, are in Portugal to present the new book and, of course, to sign autographs.
The book is called "What I learned with Bob" and is the fourth edited in Portugal. In this one, James tells the lessons he has learned from a "special" cat, a companion who has directed his life.
It's been 11 years since an orange cat, lean and wounded, appeared on the steps of the London building where James Bowen lived at the time, after many years without a roof.
At that time, James was playing music on the street to get through the worst years of his life and put an end to his drug addiction.
He did not want pets and therefore sent the cat back to the street after recovering the health of the animal.
"Soulmates"
But soon after, Bob returns home, never to leave again. And James realizes that he has to change. "I treat him like a son, and for that I had to make sure I could take care of myself first," he said with a smile.
Over time, Bob starts to accompany James while he plays in the streets of London. They go out every morning by bus, the cat on the owner's shoulder, and the homecoming is no different. It's the company of every moment, every day. They become inseparable. "We are, indeed, souls sisters", describes James.
Bob is not the first cat he has had. But the musician says that he has never met anyone who is so "intelligent, explorer and so happy" to go with him everywhere.
Soon, the story of the two would end with a book.
Dear Diary
Speaking to TSF, James Bowen does not hide the surprise of the success of his books. Writing them was a "sort of catharsis, a diary", where the whole struggle consists of "going back to life".
But not everything is easy to share. One of the most difficult things is the need to ask for help when you need it. Acknowledge that he had "bottomed out" and that, without help, he would not come back.
James says that the glory has not changed. "I'm always the same, and Bob too." But the truth is that life has turned 180 degrees. "One day we were in the street, we were no one In the other, we were in luxury hotels, all over the world, to promote the books.
Tired, but a … "happy guy"
While the owner is talking to TSF, Bob does not stop. Stroll over the couches, the coffee table in the lobby of the hotel that welcomes you to Lisbon and smells everything there is to feel. You even have a cat cookie. You're a "grumpy," notes James.
"The day was very long," he says. "We were in an animal shelter in Monsanto, we also gave interviews, so he's a little tired, but still, he's collaborating.
People, a lot of people … can you guess for the two signing sessions planned for Lisbon? The first took place this Thursday, in the Bertrand do Chiado bookstore; the second is this Friday, at the Fnac, Colombo shopping center, at 18:30.
Along the way, Bob has already won prizes, mostly scarves. A kind of branding of this orange feline. After all, James Bowen reveals that he "has more scarves than shoes from Imelda Marcos !!!".
