Delta Air Lines has announced an order for five A220-100 aircraft, bringing to 95 the total number of firm orders placed, including the A220-100 and A220-300 models.

In addition, Delta Airlines has chosen to receive all of its A220 aircraft with a change in performance from 2020, which increases the maximum takeoff weight and autonomy of the aircraft.

Delta was the US launch customer for the A220, placing an initial order of 75 aircraft in 2016 and booking 15 more in December 2018. With this latest order, Delta orders a total of 45 A220-100 aircraft and 50 aircraft A220-300.

Improved performance

Airbus announced in May of this year an increase in the maximum takeoff weight of the A220-100 and -300.

Now, the MTOW of the A220-100 is 60.78 tons, while that of the A220-300 has a MTOW of 67.58 tons.

This allows pilots to reach the maximum range of the aircraft, even with the maximum payload allowed, while improving aircraft performance in hot and dry weather.

The A220-300 can perform flights up to 5,750 kilometers, with fuel reserves and 140 passengers on board, while the A220-100 version offers a range of 5,100 kilometers with 120 passengers.

The upgrade of the MTOW will also increase their maximum range capabilities to 6200 km on the A220-300 and 6300 km on the A220-100.
