The Northern Regional Council of the Medical Association has denounced the existence of "pickets" of nurses at the entrance of operating rooms to "delay, hinder or delay" surgeries that do not meet the criterion of minimum services .
"The Medical Association recognizes nurses' right to strike. This right is inalienable to complain about working conditions or other claims, but is very concerned about the existence of pickets at the entrance of the farm building, questioning the clinical indication of patients' urgency, "said Regional Council President António Araújo.
Around three thousand planned surgeries postponed and the operating blocks working in the minimum services represent the balance of the first week of the nurses' surgical strike that ends at the end of the year, said a union source in Lusa.
"At the moment, we have an average of 500 scheduled surgeries a day and we have all the blocks that work practically with minimum services", being "very punctual rooms that work with non-strikers," said Lúcia Leite, President of the Portuguese Union of Nurses (ASPE), who called for the strike jointly with the Democratic Union of Nurses of Portugal (Sindepor).
António Araújo said that these "picket lines" were concentrated at the entrance of the operating theaters to check whether patients were complying with the minimum service indication and, if they did not do so, "delay , embarrass or not let them in ".
Nurses "forget" that there are other serious situations, which do not meet the minimum service criteria, which endanger the lives and immediate health of patients, must soon be satisfied, has t -he declares.
The President of the Regional Council said that he had received "multiple complaints" from patients and family members about situations that had occurred in "many" hospitals in the country.
António Araújo added that the pickets are composed of nurses from institutions but also from outside, which calls into question the personal information of the patient and their confidentiality.
António Araújo said that it was necessary to restore the legality, because the one who must give an indication of urgency or not of the clinical situation of the patients is the surgeon and not the nursing staff.
The strike takes place in the university hospitals of S. João (Porto), Porto, Coimbra and Lisbon Norte, as well as at the Hospital of Setúbal.
The Portuguese Association of Nurses (ASPE) and the Democratic Union of Portuguese Nurses (Sindepor) have called it. This event began at the beginning of a movement of nurses who launched a fund open to the public that has raised more than 360,000 euros. colleagues who join the status quo.
