Energy Standards Catalog focuses on energy efficiency in computer systems – Computers

The first catalog dedicated to the energy efficiency of mobile applications in Portugal has been launched. During the last three years, the GreenSoftware Lab project has received funding of more than 150,000 euros from the Foundation for Science and Technology. The free online catalog focuses on energy-efficient power standards for users concerned about the longevity of their mobile device's batteries.

"The interaction of users with these devices is often hampered by the constant worry of battery depletion," the statement said. In the catalog, this problem may no longer exist. It thus focuses on the energy efficiency of mobile applications, with the aim of improving energy consumption in computer systems.

As explained, the catalog describes several mobile application design techniques, with the goal of improving energy efficiency, to reduce battery consumption of a mobile application, such as explained Luís Cruz researcher of the Reliable Software Laboratory (HasLab) of INESC TEC and INESC-ID.

In practice, the document can be a tool for younger development teams to avoid using specialized developers to optimize their mobile applications. It also works as a starting point for programmers or students wishing to expand their technical skills in the field of energy efficiency.

The researcher points out that the use of design models to reuse effective solutions in software development is a common technique in this area. In the long run, the team hopes to increase the longevity of mobile device batteries so users do not worry about energy when interacting with devices.
