Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (Fca) announced the immediate replacement of Sergio Marchionne as the group's executive chairman because of the health problems of the 66-year-old Italian, who is also leaving the presidency and executive management of Ferrari from this Saturday.

"The Fca is deeply sorry that unexpected complications occurred during this week when Mr. Marchionne recovered from surgery and that they have worsened considerably in recent hours" said the group in a statement.

In the Fca group since 2004 and tasked with recovering the bankruptcy of the Fiat and Chrysler brands, Marchionne had scheduled duties at least until April and had already mentioned that he wanted to remain president and CEO of Ferrari until 2021.

A recent shoulder surgery resulted in complications – which were not specified – that motivated the immediate departure of the Italian manager

For Marchionne's place in the executive presidency of the Fca, the group named the British Mike Manley, who was until now responsible for the Jeep. At Ferrari, the vacant CEO will be occupied by two people: John Elkann (Fca chairman and heir to the Agneli family) and Louis Camilleri (Fca board member)
