According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the automaker disclosed in a press release that performance measures for exhaust emissions and fuel economy tests were made on the basis of modified measurement values.
Nissan however did not specify in this document the number of vehicles involved in the falsification nor the duration of the use of illegal methods.
AFP also states that, at the request of the authorities, the manufacturer had to carry out inspections since September 2016 on the way in which the vehicles produced are or have been tested, after having acknowledged that uncertified persons were signing test documents.
During the internal investigation, other illegal practices appeared that the group informed the Japanese Ministry of Transport.
"Comprehensive investigations into the facts described above, including the causes and background of this type of misconduct, are ongoing," said the automaker in a statement.
