Praça do Carmo will have a joint effort against skin cancer

On December 1st, the Santo André City Hall and the ABC School of Medicine benefit from free consultations against skin cancer. This is the "December Orange" campaign, organized at the national level by the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD). The mutirão will take place at the House of the Word, located in Praca do Carmo, in the central part of the sidewalk of Coronel Oliveira Lima street. From 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, the population will have free consultations with specialists and will be able to carry out the preventive examination.

Interested individuals will initially participate in a 10-minute discussion on skin cancer risks and prevention. All will then undergo specific care, performing dermatological and dermatoscopic examinations (assessment of the asymmetry, the contours, the color and the diameter of the pints). Suspected cases will be sent for treatment to the Skin Institute of ABC's Faculty of Medicine.

Caused by the cumulative effect of solar radiation, the disease usually manifests itself in the population beyond 50 years. "It is important that people become aware of the need for periodic prevention and dermatological evaluation.Most early identified cases of skin cancer are curable.The important thing is to look for the diagnosis. early to get a better prognosis, "says Dr. Cristina Laczynski, professor of dermatology at FMABC, who coordinates the campaign at ABC Paulista.

Thirty ABC Medicine professionals will participate in the consultations, among dermatologists, medical residents and medical students members of Lapac – League of Attention and Prevention of the State of the Skin.

HIGH INCIDENCE

Skin cancer is caused by the abnormal growth of the cells that make up the skin. As the Brazilian Society of Dermatology has detailed, there are different types of skin cancer, which can manifest themselves in different ways. The most common are basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, known as non-melanoma cancers, which have a high cure rate when diagnosed and treated early. A third type, melanoma, although not the most serious skin cancer, is the most aggressive and potentially deadly. However, when it is discovered early, it has more than 90% chance of healing.

According to data from the National Cancer Institute (INCA), 172,000 new cases of skin cancer appear each year, the most prevalent tumor in the country, accounting for 30% of all malignant tumors in Brazil. The main risk features are the presence of freckles, family history, wounds that do not heal easily, pints, signs and warts that change size and color, as well as reddened lesions.

The time that presents the greatest risk of exposure to the sun and should be avoided is between 10am and 4pm, when the incidence of ultraviolet rays is higher. The sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF (sun protection factor) remains one of the main ways of protection against sunlight and must be passed every two hours or after long periods of immersion in the sun. # 39; water. Dermatologists also recommend the use of wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses with UV protection and clothing covering a large part of the body, reducing the sun's direct exposure to the skin.

NATIONAL WICKED

Under the slogan "Exposing but not burning", the national campaign of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology aims to raise awareness and inform the public about the risks of skin cancer caused by excessive exposure to sunlight from the sun , noting that sunscreen is not the only care against ultraviolet radiation. The message aims to reach even those working in the sun or outdoors, as well as prevention at leisure.

In total, there will be 132 service stations across Brazil, involving approximately 4,000 volunteer dermatologists, which will strengthen efforts to provide care and clarify the importance of taking preventive measures. This will be the 20th edition of the national SBD campaign. Since 1999, mutirão has already benefited more than 594,000 Brazilians. In the ABC region, the action is coordinated by the discipline of dermatology of the Faculty of Medicine of ABC since the first edition, two decades ago.
