The Earth passed between the Sun and the Moon and the shadow of our planet completely hid the natural earth satellite for one hour, 42 minutes and 57 seconds: something that will not happen again before at least 2123. But everything became more special with the passage of the Moon in the darkest region of the Earth's shadow. At this point, the moon reappeared, but this time in reddish tones.
But the Moon was not the only protagonist in the sky tonight. March, which is particularly brilliant during the summer months of 2018, was clearer and will not be like this until at least 2035.
In Portugal, the eclipse and the reddish tones of the moon were barely visible: the fog did not make the best of the eclipse of the century. Yet dozens of people gathered at the Alqueva Lake Observatory near Monsaraz on the terrace of Teatro Romano in Lisbon, Sines and Coimbra. In the capital, it was even possible to observe the phenomenon with researchers from the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Science.
In Germany the images are impressive and the sky has the same red tone. In Pakistan, Egypt, Gaza or Kenya, weather conditions facilitated the observation of the eclipse of the century
. But why did not Lua become red? For two reasons. The first is the refraction of light through the atmosphere. That is, the light is reflected by the layers that make up the atmosphere and extends through the space. The second motif is called Rayleigh Diffusion, or, in simplest terms, the scattering of any electromagnetic radiation (such as light) by particles smaller than the wavelength of that radiation .
In Portugal, the moon is no longer reddish around 23:20 but the phenomenon did not finish until around 00:30. The lunar eclipse was fully visible in East Africa and Central Asia, South America, West Africa, Europe, East Asia, and Australia. . North America and Central America were the only regions to have gone through the eclipse of the century.
