The longevity of mobile device batteries is a problem for most users. The interaction of users with these devices is often hampered by the constant worry of battery depletion. This problem may, however, cease to exist. The first catalog of energy standards, focused on the energy efficiency of mobile applications, was born in Portugal and aims to improve energy consumption in computer systems.
Three years later, thanks to the funding of more than 150,000 euros from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the GreenSoftware Lab (GSL) project offers, among other results, an online catalog of energy standards: https: //tqrg.github.io/energy-patterns/#/.
"This catalog describes different techniques for designing mobile applications in order to improve their energy efficiency, ie to reduce the battery consumption of a mobile application", explains Luís Cruz, researcher at Reliable Software Laboratory (HASLab). INESC TEC and INESC-ID.
The catalog can work as a tool so that younger development teams do not need to rely on specialized developers to improve the performance of their mobile applications. In addition, the standards catalog serves as a starting point for programmers or students wishing to extend their technical capabilities to the field of energy efficiency.
The use of design templates to reuse effective solutions in software development is a common technique in this area.
