The award ceremony of the IASIST Consultant to Hospitals took place today in Lisbon and is in its fifth year. This year, five awards have been created for specific clinical areas, to which five awards of general excellence have been added.
In the field of respiratory care, the laureates were the Cascais Hospital and the Coimbra Hospital and University Center.
In the field of cardiology clinics, the Cascais Hospital was once again rewarded, as well as Braga Hospital and Vila Nova de Gaia and Espinho Hospital.
These five specific prizes for two clinical areas were awarded this year for the first time, joining the five best-performing hospital awards, which were awarded to five National Health Service institutions for a total of ten awards.
Oporto University Hospital, Braga Hospital, Cascais Hospital, Figueira da Foz Hospital and Alto Minho Local Health Unit received the highest hospital awards in 2017.
The Cascais Hospital, managed through a public-private partnership, has received three of five awards this year from the multinational consultancy IASIST.
According to Manuel Delgado, head of IISIST in Portugal, during the award of specific fellowships for the respiratory and cardiac fields, an evaluation was carried out in all the hospitals, two awards having been awarded in the respiratory zone. and three in the heart because of the different types of pathologies treated in the units. the health.
"Some units treat some specific conditions, but not all of them – we compared hospitals that treat similar conditions," Manuel Delgado told Lusa.
Thus, premiums for both clinical areas were assigned based on the type of diseases being treated.
In the respiratory field, the first group includes hospitals with a minimal volume of patients with pneumonia or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and in the second group, hospitals should also include tracheal, bronchial and lung neoplasms.
In the cardiac field, hospitals have been divided into three groups: the first concerns the treatment of heart failure, acute myocardial infarction and arrhythmia; in the second group are the pathologies and again the angioplasties and in the third group will also have to treat a disease of the heart valve and make a bypass.
