Thrombosis is a disease that obstructs blood vessels. It is caused by "thrombi", blood clots formed by fatty plaques. By blocking the veins and arteries that supply the heart and brain, for example, the pathology can cause stroke and stroke.

– The thrombus prevents the blood from circulating and is responsible for the supply of oxygen to tissues, which are no longer fed and eventually die. Some factors facilitate problems such as smoking, obesity and sedentary lifestyle – explains general practitioner Carlos Meyohas.

In addition to older people, women are more vulnerable to the disease. The doctor explains that it is because of contraceptive hormones, which facilitate the formation of obstructions in the vascular system. Diabetes is also a risk factor because too much sugar in the blood can help clog arteries and veins.

Fátima Bernardes' boyfriend, Túlio Gadelha, was diagnosed with thrombosis. He is male and only 31 years old, but is not in the at-risk group, but long-distance movement can trigger the disease.

– The position in which the person stays in the aircraft for a long time influences those who sit with their legs bent, without mobilizing them, which hinders the movement. Young people who use hormones in gyms are more vulnerable. Hereditary factors also count – explains Carlos.

The disease mainly affects the lower limbs like the calf. But according to the doctor, this can happen anywhere in the body. The symptoms are: numbness or pain at the site, redness and heat in the affected area.

– If it is an obstruction of the artery, it is urgent, requires hospitalization, limb bandage and antibiotics. In this case, you should call a vascular surgeon. Healthy eating and physical activity are good ways to prevent thrombosis, "said Carlos Meyohas.
