The National Institute of Statistics (INE) confirmed on Thursday, November 29, the figures that had already increased in the provisional estimate a month ago: the unemployment rate in Portugal rose from 6.9% in August to 6, 6% in September, the lowest since September 2002.

"In September 2018, the unemployment rate was 6.6%, down 0.3 points from the previous month, down 0.2 points from three months earlier and 2.0 percentage points lower than the previous month. less compared to the same month, month of 2017 ", details the INE. "Since September 2002, the unemployment rate has not been so low."

Compared to August, the unemployed population declined by 18,000 or 5%, while the employed labor force grew by 8.8,000 or 0.2%.

However, the National Institute of Statistics estimates that in October the unemployment rate is expected to rise by one percentage point to reach 6.7%, a figure that will only be confirmed within a month.

Occupied population increases by 0.2% in September but decreases again in October

Data for September indicate a 0.2% increase in the employed labor force, which would translate into another group of 8,800 Portuguese employed compared to August.

However, in October, the provisional estimate of the INE indicates a decrease of 0.1%, or 5,200 people employed.

The government has revised the unemployment rate down and expects this trend to continue next year. The state budget provides an unemployment rate of 6.3% for 2019, six tenths lower than the 6.9% forecast for this year.
