The fifth generation of the Renault Clio looks like the previous one, but that is not the case. Nothing at all. Just look closely to see that. In the cockpit, another revolution, more obvious in appearance, with the new concept designated by Renault Smart Cockpit. The entire design of the dashboard, center console, steering wheel, information screens, even the seats, has been modified.

The dashboard now has a waveform instead of being flat and the console is facing the driver. The instrumentation is digital and configurable via the Multi Sense system, while on the console, a large, high-definition, 9.3-inch vertical touch screen is available for the most equipped versions. The others will be entitled to a 7-inch screen, with or without navigation system.

The higher positioning of the center screen ensures safety, prevents the driver from looking too far from the road and facilitates manual operations.

Above all, we appreciated the quality of the coating materials at hand and the look that gives the Clio a more refined look, in sharp contrast to what was happening with the previous generation. The new range includes 25% softer surfaces.

In the back seat, the space does not impress, but the brand may be right to say that the banks, now thinner (and much more elegant), allow a gain of a few millimeters to the knees of the one sitting behind. Thinner, more elegant headrests also contribute to rear visibility.

The buttons with aluminum applications and the new steering wheel rods for turn signals and headlights also make the difference for the better.

The Clio can also receive an electric handbrake, releasing new spaces to better organize the objects, in addition to having in the console a charging area of ​​the smartphones by induction.

The trunk of a utility car may not be the main reason for buying, but it remains important. And here the Clio V also earns points, adding 5 liters (391) to the volume of the previous generation.

More driving quality

The sum of the changes gives a car very different from the previous generation. Take for example the headlights, now LED; the lighting length is up to 70 meters, giving the driver of the Clio another level of comfort. But not only at night. The most direct and precise steering, and especially the new suspension, firmer and more stable, make it fun on a single national road, even if under the accelerator pedal is the three-cylinder gasoline engine 1.0 liter tCe 100.

This engine, with more than 100 cc and 10 hp of power than the previous tCe 90, reacts in a simple but silent way, offering more agility to the Clio V. It is always coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox that is not exemplary in handling precision, but the selector is now in a slightly higher position to facilitate driving.

The fact that the rear track is now shorter by 12 mm can have an influence on improving the dynamics.

For those who have 100 hp and 160 Nm at 2760 rpm are not enough, the tCe 130 version is available, equipped with the 1.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, developed at the bottom with Mercedes and associated with the EDC automatic transmission to seven speeds. Of course, this version does not get the average consumption of 4.4 liters declared for the tCe 100, but it does not stop being contained in the 5.2 liters to the hundred.

The range will also include 1.5 dCi diesel versions of 85 or 115 horsepower. The brand's first hybrid, the Clio E-Tech, is expected to be equipped with a 1.6-liter Nissan gasoline engine, paired with two electric motors, which have the distinction of replacing the clutch during operation. of the gearbox. They also allow you to start in pure electric mode in most urban situations and ensure the regeneration capacity of the battery of 1.2 kWh, without function Plug-in (reserved for the next Captur E-Tech).

The new national range enters the market in mid-September with a special edition edition of 50 Edition One units, based on the RS Line equipment level and the tCe 130 engine.
