YouTube video annotations to be deleted in January

In March 2017, Google announced that it would no longer be possible to add new annotations to videos posted on YouTube as of May this year. The company said that existing annotations would still be visible to desktop video users. However, the situation has changed and all annotations in YouTube videos will no longer be posted on January 15, 2019.

"All existing annotations will be removed," says the announcement included in the end-of-note annotation posting published later this year.

The note editor was designed in 2008, "before everyone leaves mobile devices," Google said at the time of the announcement of the end of the publisher. "While 60% of the time spent on YouTube videos is generated from a mobile phone, why bother to create annotations that will not be seen by the majority of your audience?"

Instead, YouTube has bet – and well, the final screen and maps, which work on both mobile devices and desktops. According to the company, they have a much higher click-through rate than annotations, another plausible justification for change.
