The 32 teams of the NFL must be reduced to 53 players by Saturday at 3:00 pm. CT. That means that about 1,000 players will be about to be eliminated from the league this weekend.
Brian Gutekunst, General Manager of Green Bay Packers, will be actively searching the rubble. He could make several requests for derogation to reinforce his alignment before the first week.
In fact, Gutekunst has already claimed eight players on waivers since early April. It is a preferred method of player acquisition for second-year GM.
Here are the five positions most likely to be targeted by waivers this weekend:
Do Packers have a powerful and reliable number 3 on the list? Rookie Dexter Williams struggles to beat Tra Carson on the depth chart, and Carson is a substitute. Coaches do not fully trust Williams. It is certainly possible that the third Packers running back is currently on the lineup of another team. Many good backs should be available.
The Packers have already called on veteran Nicholas Grigsby for waivers Sunday. The position of the internal linebacker is really painful, especially if one expects Oren Burks (pectoral muscle) and Curtis Bolton (knee) to miss a considerable time. Grigsby will have a chance to win a spot in the lineup, but do not be surprised if one or two options are added after the cuts.
Alex Light has emerged as the third striker on the team and Billy Turner can play well against a straight tackle, but the Packers will likely want another offensive tackle capable on training, especially with Bryan Bulaga's injuries. The difficulty lies in the fact that the teams do not separate often with offensive tackles, even at the replaement level. It may therefore be difficult to find a capable player out of the box.
The Packers are set with their top three warranties, but after Adrian Amos, Darnell Savante and Raven Greene, it's unclear whether Mike Pettine has a fourth security for the first week. Ibraheim Campbell remains on the list of PUPs and may not be ready for September 5th. Josh Jones was suspended on Sunday and neither Natrell Jamerson nor Will Redmond really progressed and failed to qualify. It may be more logical to ride with Jamerson, Redmond or Tray Matthews until Campbell is ready, but if a capable player is about to be claimed, Gutekunst could call for an interim solution.
Pass-rushers are always in demand. It is possible that the Packers think they can do better than Reggie Gilbert and improve the list with a waiver request. This fifth outdoor linebacker spot is to watch this week. Rashan Gary was injured against the Raiders in Winnipeg and if he can not participate in the first week in Chicago, the Packers will probably have to keep Gilbert or find another player to enjoy the depth.
