A possible tornado caused damage north of the city of Birmingham on Monday evening.
And the possibility of severe weather isn’t quite over for Alabama. The Storm Prediction Center has released a new tornado watch for part of the state that will be in effect until 6 a.m. (see map at the top of this article).
There have been destructive storms before.
Damage has been reported east of Interstate 65 in northern Jefferson County, according to reports from the National Weather Service in Birmingham. There are also reports of damage in the Fultondale area north of Birmingham as well as at Center Point.
The same storm also caused a tornado warning for parts of Calhoun, Cleburne and Cherokee counties, but that warning was canceled at 12:30 p.m. and so far no damage has been reported in this area.
Then there is the tornado watch. The new watch will be in effect until 6 a.m. and cover parts of central and northeastern Alabama. It replaces an earlier watch that was supposed to expire at 1 a.m.
The new watch counties are: Bibb, Calhoun, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Etowah, Hale, Jefferson, Marengo, Perry, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega and Tuscaloosa.
The National Weather Service urged Alabamians to have a way to receive weather alerts at night:
The Storm Prediction Center continues to highlight a risk of severe weather this evening in Alabama. This is the update just before 7pm:
The Storm Prediction Center improved and expanded the severe weather low risk area for northern and central Alabama. A slight risk means that severe scattered storms will be possible.
Areas in yellow present a slight risk, which is level 2 out of 5 and means that scattered severe storms will be possible. The low risk zone has been extended east and south in the last update.
Parts of central and southwestern Alabama are at marginal risk, meaning isolated severe storms will be possible.
