Post Malone covered Hootie and the Blowfish for Pokémon’s 25th anniversary

On Thursday morning, Post Malone released a very special song: a cover of “Only Wanna Be With You” by Hootie and the Blowfish to celebrate Pokémon’s 25th anniversary. This Saturday, Post Malone will perform this song (and more!) At a virtual Pokémon concert on the Pokémon YouTube and Twitch channels.

Unfortunately, Post Malone did not insert all Pokémon refers to “Only Wanna Be With You”. There isn’t even a single mention of Pikachu. Seems like a missed opportunity to me, but the coverage is still good – a pretty faithful rendition of the song with samples from Pokémon-esque games. (There’s a modified reference, but it’s a soccer reference: the Miami Dolphins to the Dallas Cowboys, which is Post Malone’s favorite team. Now you know that!)

I’m sure you’re asking, why Hootie and the Blowfish? Well, here’s my best guess: “Only Wanna Be With You” came out in 1995, and Pokémon came out in 1996. And honestly, that’s enough connection for me. For a long time, the only CDs I owned as a kid were Grammy compilations – and that’s why I have this nostalgic fondness for Hootie and the Blowfish.

(For what it’s worth, Hootie and the Blowfish’s “Only Wanna Be With You” wasn’t on the 1996 Grammys CD – but “Let Her Cry” was.)

Along with Post Malone’s new song, The Pokémon Company announced Thursday morning that it would release a Pokémon Presents video on Friday at 10 a.m.ET. No actual details have been announced on what to expect, but many are speculating that this will be where the company announces remakes of. Pokemon diamond and Pearl.
