Postal Service to remove collection boxes in LA, OC ahead of possible protests – Daily News

The U.S. Postal Service has announced plans to temporarily remove 14 blue mail collection boxes in Los Angeles and Orange counties as a safety measure ahead of possible protests.

The Postal Service is joining many other agencies across the country in planning protests before and after President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday. Pundits and law enforcement fear protests could turn violent after rioters raped the U.S. Capitol last week.

“These are temporary measures to protect postal property, employees and the public,” the postal service said in a Jan. 13 statement.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday called on the California National Guard to step up security in the state capital, where a dozen mail collection boxes will be removed in Sacramento. About another dozen will be cut in San Francisco.

In Southern California, mail collection boxes will be removed in areas known to attract rallies and protests in downtown Los Angeles, Van Nuys and Huntington Beach.

In Los Angeles, four collection boxes were being collected in the Civic Center neighborhood, on 1st and 2nd streets near San Pedro Street.

In Van Nuys, six boxes were being collected in or near its civic center, including five on Boulevard Van Nuys. Another box was being pulled a few blocks north of Van Nuys Boulevard near Haynes Street, where a few government buildings are nearby, including the Los Angeles Department of Water and Electricity and a postal service office.

In Huntington Beach, three boxes were removed from Olive Avenue near Main Street, where a Postal Service office is also located.

The boxes will be collected either Friday evening after the last pick-up time or early tomorrow Saturday morning, said Evelina Ramirez, a spokesperson for the Postal Service.
