A man armed with a handgun defended himself during an attempted robbery in Los Angeles and left two suspects with gunshot wounds in the legs, police said.
“Words were apparently exchanged, and the victim finally pulled out a handgun, apparently in defense of himself and the other members of his group, against the alleged theft suspects. The victim fired his weapon in the direction of the suspects, then all parties immediately fled the scene ”, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a press release Tuesday.
The attempted robbery took place on Melrose Avenue on Monday when two men exited a Dodge Avenger in slow motion, one of them wielding a handgun.

Video footage shows the men confronting a man with a shopping bag and two women standing in the parking lot.
The victim man, allegedly the target of the robbery, pulled out his own handgun and sent the two suspects running as he opened fire.
Police arrested and identified the two suspects as Nicholas Brown and Markeil Hayes, both of Los Angeles, and said they were both convicted of attempted theft and are currently on parole.

Brown was shot in the upper left thigh while Hayes was shot in the right calf. Police are still looking for the third suspect and are asking the public to help find him.
“The Los Angeles Police Department is aggressively tackling an increase in violent crime in the Melrose area over the past year and is pursuing all leads involved in this and other crime,” added the police in the press release.
Police did not immediately return Fox News’ request for further comment on the crime.

Homicides in Los Angeles have increased 25% this year, with southern Los Angeles seeing a 50% increase in murders.
Violent crime has also increased in cities across the country, including Philadelphia, where gun crime has increased dramatically.

Earlier this month, Philadelphia broke a ten-year record breaking the 300 homicide milestone earlier this year. The city’s last weekend was also bloody, with at least three dozen people shot dead, three of them fatally.
