According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 300 cases of potentially life-threatening drug-resistant germs have been reported in New York.
Candida auris, an emerging yeast mushroom
, Presents a serious threat to global health, according to the CDC. This yeast often does not respond to commonly used antifungal medications, making infections difficult to treat, the CDC said.
A total of 309 cases have been reported in the state of New York, mainly in health facilities.
Those who have long been hospitalized in a health facility, have a central venous catheter, or other lines or tubes entering their body, or have already received antibiotics or antifungal medications, appear to be at a higher risk of infection by this yeast, CDC Reports.
The CDC is concerned about C. auris for three main reasons:

It is often multidrug-resistant, which means that it is resistant to several antifungal medications commonly used to treat Candida infections.

It is difficult to identify with standard laboratory methods and may be poorly identified in laboratories without specific technology. Misidentification can lead to inappropriate management.

This caused epidemics in health facilities. For this reason, it is important to quickly identify C. auris in an inpatient patient so that health facilities can take special precautions to stop its spread.
