A day after the synagogue attack he founded, Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein recounted the shooting events that made one woman and three others injured.

The shooting took place Saturday at the Chabad of Poway synagogue before the Passover celebration.

The alleged gunman, John T. Earnest, age 19, was detained on a first degree murder charge and three counts of attempted first degree murder, according to the sheriff's department of San Diego County.

The sheriff's office said they believed the alleged gunman had acted alone. The case is currently under investigation as a hate crime and a violation of federal civil rights.

Goldstein said that he was preparing for his sermon on Saturday, the last day of Passover and one of the holiest days of the year, when he entered the lobby and saw Lori Gilbert Kaye. Kaye was coming to the service to make a prayer for her recently deceased mother, Goldstein said at a press conference Sunday.

"I'm going to the banquet hall to wash my hands, I've done two, three steps when I hear a loud noise," Goldstein said.

He said that he thought Kaye might have fallen or that the lobby table had been overturned. Goldstein said he saw a young man standing with a gun.

The rabbi said that he had looked at the man, but "he was wearing sunglasses and I could not see his eyes, I could not see his soul, I froze."

Goldstein said his first concern was about Kaye, one of his friends, whom he had known for nearly 25 years.

While trying to understand what had happened to Kaye, Goldstein said that the gunman fired shots in his hand. Goldstein said that after a four-hour surgery on Saturday, he had lost one of his index finger.

After being shot, Goldstein said that he understood that there were children playing in the banquet room.

Goldstein says, "I rushed to get them in. My granddaughter, aged four and a half, sees her grandfather with a bleeding hand and she sees me screaming and shouting" Get out! Go outside! "She did not deserve to see her grandfather like that."

According to Goldstein, one of the men, Almog Peretz, came to help other children, including Peretz's niece, Noya Dahan, who is 8 years old. Peretz and Dahan were injured and treated for their injuries. Goldstein said the two were doing well and were recovering on Sunday.

"Miraculously, just miraculously, the weapon got stuck," Goldstein said. "And at the synagogue, there was a border patrol, an officer on leave … who recently discovered his Jewish roots."

This agent, Jonathan Morales, fired at the suspect's car.

"After the shooter and this terrorist left, I turned around to assess the situation," said the rabbi. "I enter the lobby and I see Lori lying on the floor, unconscious."

Goldstein said that Kaye's husband was trying to revive her, but had fainted next to his wife.

Kaye was a pioneer for the congregation, said Goldstein.

He added: "For those of us who know, Lori knows that she is a person of unconditional love."
