John Earnest's family, the 19-year-old accused of kill one person and hurt two others in a synagogue in Poway, California on Saturday issued a statement condemning his actions. "The actions of our son have been informed by people we do not know and ideas that we do not remember," wrote the family in a statement released Monday.
"Like our five other children, he was raised in a family, faith and community that rejected hatred and taught that love should be the motive for everything we did." How was our son attracted to such darkness is a terrifying mystery to us, although we are confident that the forces of order will discover many details about the path it has taken to get to this perverse and despicable act, "continued the press release.
The family said they cooperate with the investigators and claim that "our heavy hearts will always go to the victims and the survivors".
Earnest would have written a manifesto related to the Shooting of the Chabad Synagogue containing antisemitic rhetoric and posted it on the 8chan online forum. He would have cited as inspiration the shooting of last year at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, which left 11 dead, and the massacre at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, last month that killed 50 people. The suspect of this attack also posted a manifesto on 8chan and broadcast a live video of the shooting.
The FBI confirmed to CBS News that it received an information five minutes before Earnest allegedly opened fire. Anonymous advice, submitted online, led the authorities to "an anonymous threatening publication on a social networking site". Authorities could not identify the author of the publication in the minutes before the attack.
Earnest returned to the police shortly after the attack. He was charged with murder and three attempted murder. His trial is scheduled for Tuesday.
