Power outage at LAX impacts terminals and forces airlines to cancel fires

(CNN) – Parts of the Los Angeles International Airport were deprived of light and electricity for about three and a half hours on Wednesday night, resulting in the cancellation, delay, and diversion of flights.

The electricity was cut around 18h10. local time, said a spokesman for the airport. It was restored just after 10 pm, the airport announced, stating that he was working on the resumption of operations.

Terminals 1, 7 and 8 suffered a long power outage and "several flights were delayed, hijacked or canceled," the airport said.

Although the emergency lighting worked during the outage, there was only enough means to allow passengers to find their bearings, and much of the airport was plunged into darkness, said CNN's subsidiary, KTLA. The failure also disrupted the use of jet bridges.

David Andres Espinoza was a passenger of a plane that flew during the breakdown. He told CNN that he had been stuck in the plane for about half an hour so that portable stairs could be brought.

A spokeswoman for Southwest Airlines told CNN that "all incoming flights have been diverted and all remaining flights of the evening have been canceled."

That equates to about 40 flights, said spokeswoman Michelle Agnew. The airline plans to resume a normal schedule Thursday morning.

United Airlines said it was to hijack nine flights and cancel two more. The airline said 19 flights were also delayed. United said that he was working to get back to normal and asked customers to check online for the status of their flight.
