Power outages could continue until Tuesday

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Power outages across much of Texas could continue at least Tuesday, officials from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas said Monday morning.

In a call organized with media representatives, the senior director of system operations Dan Woodfin said the ERCOT had reached an all-time new peak demand and the system may not have not been able to handle the load.

Woodfin acknowledged that a planned outage of up to 45 minutes was pushed far beyond in several locations in Texas. He declined to say when that power could be restored, but said they were working around the clock to do so.

At around 1:25 a.m., according to a press release, ERCOT entered emergency conditions and triggered power outages at that time. They say that by that time about 10,500 MW of customer load had been removed from the system. That’s enough electricity to serve around two million homes.

However, extreme weather conditions forced several power sources to go offline at that time, the statement said.

This represents more than 30,000 MW of electricity.

During the call, officials said it was the longest period of service disruption.

Currently, approximately two million people remain without power in Texas, many of them in central Texas.

ERCOT asks everyone to conserve energy as much as possible, to reduce stress on the power grid as they strive to get everyone back online.
