If you are one of the enthusiasts who follow the construction of fields, you have witnessed one of the busiest turnstiles in history. Including former champions who return regularly, on Monday there were 21 early withdrawals. Many, but not all, have been linked to complications caused by COVID-19, but the R&A solved the puzzle of how to present the strongest field available, and a handful of international talent at that. Of those who signed up, 30 competed in the 2011 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s. As it did that year and will be again this week, the Sandwich track – as the crow flies, the city in the south-east of England is closer to France than to London – will be tested at a par of 70. The seventh and 14th holes serve as the par 5. The course is at 7,189 yards, down 22 yards from ten years ago.
With an average of 73,018 in 2011, Royal St. George’s ranked as the most difficult course compared to par this entire season. When it was upgraded to a par 71 in 2003 – the fourth hole was a par 5 – it was even more difficult at 3,802 strokes over par. It is expected in this tournament. Unpredictable lies are the backbone of the bonding experience, even on the shortest grass, and the uncertainty of the ever-changing weather conditions delivers 1-2 punches throughout.
Unlike most link layouts, Royal St. George’s consists of a new front that winds towards the sea with a setback on the interior side. There is also an unusual separation between the holes, and six are adjacent to the coast, although, and of course, all 18 are windy. The classes at The Open Rota are as much about execution and experience as they are patience and understanding. You take what it gives, you don’t force the issue, and you walk away with a smile when you log in with relative successes. In all of this there is the belief that reducing errors is more important than getting around par breakers.
The prevailing winds will be from the north and should be maintained at 10-15 mph for the first and last laps. They will cool off a bit in between. Daytime peaks will open in the 1970s before retreating into the 1960s for the rest. More surprisingly, the rain is not expected. This is not a printing error.
In addition to the Claret Jug, the champion will receive 600 FedExCup points, $ 2.07 million, exemptions for the Open until the age of 60, exemptions for the next five editions of the other three majors and one exemption. five-year membership in the PGA TOUR.
