This is week 6, the point where we have reached half of the first-half schedule (Wednesday) and 25% of the full 1080-game 2020-2021 schedule will have been played. It will be Friday, unless several other games are postponed.
The quarter-pole is usually when teams can actually determine their position. But things are obviously different this season. Not only have there been postponements and extended absences due to the coronavirus, but this is the first season of the new rules of the game.
So instead of pulling a single line after the top eight teams in each conference, we need to imagine two lines: one that separates the top six from the rest of the group, and another for the play-in teams from the seventh to the last. tenth place. That makes everything cloudier, especially in the East, where the reigning conference champions currently sit 13th at 6-9. Only five teams in the East have winning records and the Miami Heat, 13th, is only a game and a half behind the Cleveland Cavaliers, sixth.
The situation in the West is a bit clearer and perhaps a lot more disappointing for the New Orleans Pelicans 5-10, 14th. Where things are really interesting is at the top, where the LA Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Utah Jazz all have just four losses.
All three teams lead this week’s standings, with the champions remaining in the lead for the sixth week in a row after a big win in Milwaukee. They will play the other two leading teams in the East this week, while the Jazz will have some big games in the conference.
