A massive power outage hit Saturday night in New York, causing nightmares of traffic, leaving tourists puzzled and throwing Broadway audiences into the streets.

Information reporting a power outage began to surface on social media around 7 pm. AND. Just before midnight, the city's power company, Con Edison, announced that electricity was almost fully restored. At the height of the blackout, local media reported that about 70,000 customers were without electricity.

The photos showed important sites without electricity, including the Rockefeller Center and Times Square, where tourists watched blank electronic screens.

Some Broadway productions were forced to cancel shows and a Jennifer Lopez concert at Madison Square Garden ended abruptly in the middle of the song. The dramatic video posted on Twitter showed the moment when the concert was darkened.

The New York Fire Department said that a transformer fire at West 64th Street and West End Avenue had caused a power outage. The Upper West Side, Midtown and Hell's Kitchen are among the affected areas.

Moving around the city has become a challenge after the power loss of several subway stations. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority posted a tweets, claiming that the service was "significantly disrupted". At one point, the MTA urged residents to "avoid underground metro stations" until Con Edison could restore power.

NBC News correspondent and presenter Kate Snow tweeted an image of a dark corridor at the network's headquarters, saying staff members were forced to use standby generators to broadcast the Saturday edition of the Nightly News .

The producer of the Hearst Media Group, Derek Turner, also shared on Twitter the photo of a man directing traffic after the public lighting went out.
