Chloe Bennet has resigned as one of the three main cast of the live-action CW pilot based on “The Powerpuff Girls”, Variety exclusively learned.
Bennet was to play the role of Blossom in the pilot, which is currently titled “Powerpuff”. The show was originally up for grabs during pilot season earlier this year for a potential fall air date, but The CW made the decision to revamp and resume it instead, President -CW chief executive Mark Pedowitz calling the first pilot “missed”.
According to someone with knowledge of the situation, the Warner Bros. Television wanted to expand Bennet’s option as they reworked the pilot, but scheduling conflicts forced her to quit instead. Casting for a new third Powerpuff Girl will begin in the fall.
Dove Cameron remains committed to the series as Bubbles while Yana Perrault remains committed to playing Buttercup. Other actors in the original pilot included Donald Faison as Professor Drake Utonium, Nicholas Podany as the series version of villainous Mojo Jojo named Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr., and Robyn Lively as Sara Bellum. Talks are currently underway for their return as well.
“Powerpuff” was first announced as being in development in August 2020. Based on the Cartoon Network series created by Craig McCracken, the new series sees pint-sized superheroes as youngsters of a size. twenty years disillusioned at having lost their childhood to the fight against crime.
