The CW is bracing for a potential galore of girl power.
The network has launched three pilot projects focused on young women, TVLine learned, including a live action project based on The Powerpuff Girls cartoon series.
The Powerpuff Girls will follow the characters introduced in Craig McCracken’s Cartoon Network series, who are now “disillusioned nineties who don’t appreciate losing their childhood fighting crime,” the official logline reads . “Will they agree to come together now that the world needs it more than ever?”
Heather Regnier (Veronica mars, Sleepy hollow) and Diablo Cody (Juno, Tara’s United States) will write and produce the potential series. Überproducer Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter (Black Lightning) and David Madden (Runaway bride) will also serve as executive producers.
The CW also ordered Naomi, a serial adaptation of the comic book of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis / David F. Walker / Jamal Campbell. According to the connection line: “Naomi follows the journey of a teenage girl from her small northwestern town to the heights of the Multiverse. When a supernatural event deeply shakes her hometown, Naomi sets out to uncover her origins, and what she finds will challenge all we believe about our heroes.
Naomi is from Ava DuVernay (Queen Sugar, When they see us) and Jill Blakenship (The arrow), who will both write and produce. Other EPs include Sarah Bremner (Shiny, The white tiger) and Paul Garnes (Queen Sugar, Underground).
The third greenlit project is a still untitled dramatic comedy about two millennial nuns: one who is pious and a true believer, and the other who has not yet taken her final vows. They “start out as strangers and become sisters on a funny, spiritual journey to understand their own faith and their place in the Catholic Church,” the line reads. The project, by Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir, names Jennie Snyder Urman (Jane the Virgin) among its executive producers.
In addition, the CW on Tuesday issued a direct order for a reboot of The 4400. Earlier this month, The CW renewed 12 series for the 2021-22 TV season, including The Flash, Riverdale, Dynasty and the recent Walker restart the launch.
