The Pittsburgh Steelers face multiple injuries again this week, but a fundamentally different squad from a week ago. Although the Steelers already have three players excluded for Sunday’s game, it is only a starter unlike last week when they had three, including two in the same position. With the Steelers not having enough healthy offensive linemen to have 48 active players (they must have eight), look for a move later Saturday with a practice squad elevation or by knocking out Zach Banner from the reserve / injured list.
The rules for the 2021 season for active players on match day have been carried over from last season. As long as a team has eight offensive linemen who dress for the game, they could have 48 players on their active roster rather than the 46 from previous seasons. If the Steelers elevated players from their practice squad, their inactive roster would increase by the same number of players. Until the Steelers announce an elevation, we’ll assume it’s just five players, but also add more choices as one or two players will likely be called up.
Game Status
Outside:
OT Chuks Okorafor (concussion)
g Loose rashaad (peg)
DT Carlos davis (knee)
Questionable:
WR Chase claypool (tendon)
Here are the possibilities of ending up inactive for the Steelers against the Packers on Sunday:
Absoutely:
OT Chuks Okorafor– After leaving last week’s game with a concussion, there was some hope for Okorafor to clear protocol for this week as he was unable to train on Wednesday or Thursday. As for who’s playing the right tackle, it will either be the return of IR’s Zach Banner or substitute Joe Haeg with another high tackle from the practice squad.
g Loose rashaad– Inactive for the first three weeks of the 2021 season, the fact that Coward is injured only makes him certain rather than more likely.
DT Carlos davis– The setback is 20/20 as Davis missing three weeks in a row, he could easily have been placed on the reserve / injured list had the Steelers realized his injury would continue to linger.
Probably:
QB Dwayne Haskins– He almost had a chance last week with Roethlisberger being limited Thursday for practice, but Big Ben has completed his two normal workouts this week and Haskins will be in formal attire again.
CB Ahkello Witherspoon– By increasing a category so that it is probably inactive, I think Witherspoon will continue to be the strange man at least during the week off. As soon as I say that, he will probably have a helmet this week.
May be:
WR Chase claypool– Not only is Claypool questionable for the game, the fact that he followed poor progress after suffering a hamstring injury on Thursday doesn’t look good for the second-year. Expect the Steelers to make a statement about Claypool on Saturday, albeit indirectly by raising a practice squad wide receiver for the second week in a row.
KG buddy johnson– Last week, the Steelers had the opportunity to dress all six inside linebackers. This week, they’ll probably need to have one on the sidelines. With the least experience, Johnson would likely be the first choice.
KG Marcus Allen / Ulysées Gilbert– It would be foolish to think that Buddy Johnson To be the inside linebacker who doesn’t get a helmet on Sunday. Marcus Allen or Ulysees Gilbert could end up being sidelined in his place.
Unlikely:
CB Arthur Maulet– At first, I thought that the final helmet for the cornerback position was between Maulet and Witherspoon. After seeing who the Steelers picked last week and that Maulet played well, I don’t see him not being part of Sunday’s game plan.
List of projected inactive:
- Chuks Okorafor
- Loose rashaad
- Carlos davis
- Dwayne Haskins
- Ahkello White Spoon
- Buddy Johnson *
- Chase Claypool *
First I have to explain that the Steelers have to take a step on Saturday. Somehow they have to add an offensive lineman in order to have 48 players dressed. If Zach Banner is ready to play, I think it would be the first choice to add him to the 53-player roster, which means one of the players listed above will either be released or put on the roster. reserve / injured. If that happens, my predictions all change to replace the player who is no longer on the roster. If Banner isn’t ready to go, I suspect Chaz Green gets a call from the practice squad putting Buddy Johnson on the inactive list.
The Steelers will have the opportunity to raise another player, and it all comes down to the wide receiver. If Chase Claypool can’t make it, the Steelers will likely raise Cody White or one of the other players. That’s why Claypool is on the list at the bottom. If the Steelers are to have so many inactive players due to an elevation, it will be because of someone taking Claypool’s place. No elevation, and I believe Claypool is active. My ultimate call is that Claypool has to sit this one down.
As for the other choices, they are quite cut and dry. Witherspoon is still a wild card, but being inactive last week makes me believe he will be again.
As always, feel free to list your projected inactive in the comments below.
