The Champions League is back, although Chelsea could not have attracted a tougher opponent than Atlético Madrid. The La Liga leaders could very well represent Thomas Tuchel’s biggest challenge of the season, with tactics and team selection having to be perfect. Chelsea could certainly be satisfied with a first quarter-final since 2014.
PEOPLE’S CHOICE
There were no surprises in the roster as the WAGNH community stuck to 3-4-3, with the likes of 4-2-3-1 (12%) and 4-3-3 (9%) far behind. . Likewise, Édouard Mendy continues not to be troubled by Kepa Arrizabalaga (6%).
With Thiago Silva still absent, the three backs of Toni Rüdiger, Andreas Christensen and César Azpilicueta should work well. Kurt Zouma (46%) returns to the bench. Ben Chilwell is preferred to Marcos Alonso (40%) at the back after a poor performance by the latter this weekend. On the other side, it’s Reece James who has no competition with Callum Hudson-Odoi who plays up front.
N’Golo Kanté and Mateo Kovačić’s pivot was not at his best as Southampton held Chelsea to a draw on Saturday, but Jorginho (40%) is missing yet again, with Billy Gilmour (2%) a bit more only an afterthought.
Hakim Ziyech (15%) was far from the rhythm on Saturday and the community reacted accordingly by favoring Mason Mount and Hudson-Odoi ahead of him. Christian Pulisic (38%) and Kai Havertz (25%) have just returned from an injury, so voters did not find it necessary to rush them. Timo Werner leads the line ahead of Tammy Abraham (14%) and Olivier Giroud (38%).
3-4-3 (73%)
Mendy (93%) | Rüdiger (85%), Christensen (66%), Azpilicueta (80%) | Chilwell (57%), Kanté (74%), Kovačić (82%), James (60%) | Hudson-Odoi (63%), Werner (83%), Mount (91%)
MY FAVORITE CHOICE
Yes, I am staying with Jorginho. The team feel unbalanced without him on the pitch, especially since the switch to Tuchel’s system. While Kanté should also be useful against the opposition trying to catch up with you at the break, I still have a feeling that we will urgently need Jorginho here.
I was kinda on the fence of who should start up front. Giroud seems like a wise choice against a physical and deep side like Atlético, but I understand why the community ended up sticking with Werner even though I don’t really see how he will fare better against that strong defense. I hope I am wrong.
I also kept Alonso on the side despite his recent bad display as my gut tells me he will show up against Diego Simeone’s men. A little more height on the side wouldn’t be too bad either.
3-4-3
Mendy | Rüdiger, Christensen, Azpilicueta | Alonso, Jorginho, Kovacic, James | Hudson-Odoi, Giroud, Mont
