President Donald Trump has discussed the possibility of granting pardons to his family members and some close associates, several sources familiar with the matter told NBC News.
A source said the conversations of the past few days have been taking place against the backdrop of a president who feels in trouble, and not because Trump thinks he or members of his family have done something illegal.
The New York Times first reported the discussions and said Trump discussed whether to grant preventive pardons to his three oldest children, Eric and Donald Jr., and White House adviser Ivanka. Trump and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as well as lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
The Times reported that Trump spoke with Giuliani to forgive him no later than last week.
Giuliani denied denying this to NBC News, calling it a “lie” and that the information was “totally false”.
The White House did not comment.
Trump has not admitted losing the November presidential election to President-elect Joe Biden, and he and Giuliani have continued to make false and baseless claims that the election was rigged. The claims are devoid of any proof and legal efforts have suffered repeated setbacks.
Trump last week granted a “full pardon” to his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who has twice pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI. Trump had said in March that he was considering the move.
A person familiar with the matter said that pardons have generally received more attention in recent weeks and the President is willing to give them.
Earlier Tuesday, court documents unsealed by a judge suggest that federal investigators are examining what has been described as a potential “corruption against pardon” project involving presidential pardons.
The heavily redacted documents do not name Trump or anyone who might be involved. They also do not indicate whether White House officials were aware of any ploy.
Asset tweeted Tuesday evening: “The pardon inquiry is false news!”
