A day after a pro-Trump rally turned into a riot and violation of the Capitol building in Washington DC, President Trump is now focusing his attention on forgiving some of hip-hop’s favorite rappers.
According to a Bloomberg.com report Thursday, Jan.7, Trump plans to forgive Lil Wayne, 38, and Kodak Black, 23, as well as himself, senior White House officials and members of his family.
Trump, 74, plans to announce pardons on Jan.19, his last full day in office. People familiar with the matter say the president’s ideas are currently being considered by senior advisers and the White House board office.
It would be a preventive pardon for Wayne and Trump, who are not currently in jail. Trump would like preventive pardons to protect anyone facing legal action against prosecution for any federal crimes committed before pardons were issued.
Lil Wayne’s legal issues stem from a guilty plea he entered in a firearms possession case in December 2020. Weezy pleaded guilty in federal court to possession of a firearm and ammunition by a criminal convicted after being arrested for the offense at Miami- Opa Locka Executive Airport in 2019. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted because he has already been convicted of a crime with firearm following an arrest in 2007 in New York.
In October last year, Wayne met with President Trump to discuss criminal justice reform and the Platinum Plan for his campaign, which drew a lot of backlash from the hip-hop community.
“Just had a great reunion with @realdonaldtrump @potus on top of what he’s done so far with penal reform, the platinum plan is going to give the community real ownership,” Wayne tweeted with a photo of him and Trump. “He listened to what we had to say today and assured him he would and he could do it.”
Kodak Black is currently at the United States Penitentiary, Thomson, Illinois, where he is currently serving 12 months in prison for a 2019 arrest for attempted second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, which comes with a sentence. 46 months in jail for making a false statement on government paperwork while attempting to purchase a registered gun in 2019.
While in prison, Kodak publicly requested President Trump’s help. In September of last year, his legal team contacted Trump to commute his sentence. Kodak seeks to change a legal sentence or punishment to a lesser sanction. Bradford Cohen, the rapper’s lawyer, confirmed to XXL this “commutation was filed” with Trump to shorten Kodak’s sentence.
A month later, in November 2020, the Florida rapper said he would donate $ 1 million to charity if Trump granted him pardon for his offenses.
“If the president releases them, I’ll spend $ 1million on charity in the first year I’m gone. That’s on everything,” Kodak tweeted at the time.
Earlier this week, January 4, Comrade 2016 XXL Freshman Lil Yachty also called on Trump to commute Kodak’s prison sentence.
“Hey @realDonaldTrump, my friend @ KodakBlack1k deserves to be commuted,” Yachty, 23, tweeted. “The system punished him too harshly for a #freekodak paperwork crime.”
Today is the first time Trump has considered forgiving both Wayne and Kodak. XXL has contacted camps for Lil Wayne and Kodak Black for comment.
