Prince Charles and Camilla have disabled Twitter comments on their accounts following a trolling influx of users seemingly angered by the most recent series of The crown. The royal couple’s @ClarenceHouse Twitter account is now limited, and only people the account follows or those mentioned in one of their Tweets are allowed to respond directly. When you reply to a Tweet on their page, you receive the following message: “People @ClarenceHouse follows or mentioned may reply.”
The move follows increased attention online and comments from trolls who apparently watched The crown series four, and angered by the show’s portrayal of Princess Diana’s treatment at the hands of Charles and Camilla. Series 4 introduced Diana (played by Emma Corrin) to the narrative and didn’t paint Charles and Camilla in the best light.
Comments left by viewers also extended to Instagram, where they are currently still allowed. However, they tend to support Diana more, rather than mean words to Charles or Camilla. In one photo, for example, users left “ Diana ❤️ ” or “ Diana Forever ” comments in their hordes, in support of the Prince of Wales’ first wife.
Others, however, left messages of support for Camilla on Twitter, noting that it’s a shame the abuse has forced them to take action. “It’s especially sad that @ClarenceHouse had to turn off their comments section due to online hate! We love and appreciate you, Charles and Camilla! #Weloveyoucamilla [sic], ” wrote a Twitter user.
Clarence House has yet to comment on the situation or respond to requests for further information on why they closed their public responses on Twitter.
