Prince Harry is certain that the disinformation spread on social media was a key part of the planning for the January 6 riot in the US capital.
The Duke of Sussex claims in a new Q&A Fast Company that “the dominant online platforms have contributed to and fueled the conditions for a hate crisis, a health crisis and a crisis of truth.”
“We are losing loved ones to conspiracy theories,” he continued, “losing our sense of ourselves to the barrage of false truths, and on a larger scale, losing our democracies.
Asked about the “well-documented online harassment” he and his wife Meghan Markle suffered in the UK, Harry said false information spread on social media was a big contributor.
“I was really surprised how my story was told in a way, my wife’s story was told in a way and then our union started something that made the telling of this story very. different, ”he said.
“This false narrative has become the mother ship of all the harassment you talk about. It wouldn’t even have started if our story had just been told honestly.
Harry has also addressed tech giants such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook banning former President Trump, and while he hasn’t mentioned Trump directly, he believes companies have every right to regulate those who, in their opinion, abuse the platform.
“We have seen time and time again what happens when the real cost of disinformation is ignored,” he continued. “There is no way to minimize this. There has been a literal attack on democracy in the United States, organized on social media, which is a problem of violent extremism.
Last week it was reported that Harry and Meghan would likely quit social media altogether due to the ‘hate’ they received.
