Prince Harry issued a statement regarding the Taliban’s new grip on Afghanistan.
The Duke of Sussex, who has already served in the British Army for a decade, including two deployments to Afghanistan, released a joint statement on Monday with Dominic Reid, CEO of Harry’s Invictus Games.
In it, they call on the international community, especially those who have served or whose family members have served in the country, to reach out to each other as emotions erupt over the Taliban takeover.
“What is happening in Afghanistan resonates throughout the international Invictus community”, their statement reads. “Many participating and competing countries in the Invictus Games family have a common experience of service in Afghanistan over the past two decades, and for several years we have competed alongside the Invictus Games Afghanistan team.”
The statement concludes, “We encourage everyone across the Invictus network – and the military community at large – to reach out and support each other. ”

The Duke of Sussex founded the Invictus Games in 2014 with the aim of using athletics and competition to inspire service members to recover both physically and mentally from injuries sustained in combat.
The international military community has expressed strong feelings about the situation in Afghanistan after more than two decades of military operations aimed at preventing the Taliban from regaining power.
The Taliban have moved into several cities across the country in recent weeks, culminating in the takeover of the capital Kabul over the weekend. The fall of the city sparked the collapse of the government as US forces continued their planned withdrawal.

The Taliban are pushing to restore the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the country’s official name under Taliban rule before militants were driven out by US-led forces in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, orchestrated by Al-Qaeda while sheltered by the Taliban.
President Biden addressed the nation on Monday, saying he “squarely” supported his decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan after 20 years of presence, while admitting that the country’s fall to the Taliban “s ‘took place faster than we expected. . ”

The president, speaking from the White House, said his administration was “closely monitoring the situation on the ground in Afghanistan” and moving “quickly” to execute the new plans put in place.

“I strongly support my decision,” said the president. “After 20 years, I have learned the hard way that there is never a good time to withdraw American forces.”
