Prince Harry was once very close to his sister-in-law Kate Middleton, long before Meghan Markle stepped on the scene and marked the start of her royal journey.
When Prince William proposed to Kate, he made sure to present the future Duchess with a gorgeous sapphire diamond that previously belonged to Princess Diana.
Originally, Kate wasn’t supposed to have the ring, but thanks to Harry’s touching tribute, she ended up wearing it because of her future brother-in-law.
Royal experts have revealed: “William chose his mother’s Cartier watch, and Harry chose her sapphire and diamond engagement ring.”
Harry was only 12 when he kept his mother’s ring. But when William proposed to Kate long before he even met Meghan, Harry decided to sacrifice the precious jewel so that Kate could have it.
“They had agreed that whoever got engaged first would get Diana’s ring – and of course, that was William and Kate,” the expert said.
This meant that Meghan, who got engaged to Harry in 2017, was deprived of the royal family legacy.
So much so that when Harry asked, he couldn’t find any of Diana’s jewelry to offer him, so he had to design the ring himself, using two diamonds from Diana’s collection and one from Botswana.
Keeping the royal tradition alive, Kate and Meghan wear their engagement rings alongside Welsh gold wedding rings.
