Prince Harry has reportedly been denied permission to participate, even symbolically, in a Remembrance Day ceremony in the UK.
The 36-year-old royal personally requested from Buckingham Palace that a wreath be laid at the cenotaph in his name during Remembrance Day services, but the proposal was reportedly quickly stopped.
Royal courtiers rejected the request on the grounds that he no longer represented the monarchy, reports The Sunday Times. The Queen has not been told of her grandson’s wishes.
It must surely be a blow to the Duke of Sussex, who served in the military for 10 years, reached the rank of captain, made two tours of Afghanistan and created the Invictus Games, an international sporting event for the armed forces personnel injured. .
According to the Sussex biography “Finding Freedom”, Harry was devastated to have been stripped of his military titles earlier this year, following his break with the royal family and his move to California with his wife Meghan Markle and their son, Archie.
It is yet another sign of the growing schism between him and the royal family. Harry’s brother Prince William and their father Prince Charles both attended the service and laid wreaths.
Instead, Harry and Markle laid flowers and a wreath at Los Angeles National Cemetery on Sunday. The couple stopped in front of the headstones of two Commonwealth soldiers, one who had served in the Royal Canadian Artillery and the other in the Royal Australian Air Force.
Harry, who first laid a wreath in 2009 at the cenotaph – which looks like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the United States – recently spoke about the solemn day of the “Declassified” podcast.
“Remembrance Day is a time of respect and hope for me. I wear [the poppy] to celebrate the bravery and determination of all of our veterans. These are the people and times that I remember when I greet, when I stand at attention, and when I lay a wreath at the cenotaph.
“Service is what happens in calm and chaos. This is what happens in the dark, this is what happens when people are not looking. This is what happens on and off the battlefield. It’s about doing our duty as soldiers, ”Harry continued. “For me as a father, husband and human being, it’s about how we stand up for these values in all aspects of our lives.”
