Prince Philip, 99, begins second weekend in hospital during longest stay as he continues to be treated for infection

  • The Duke of Edinburgh, 99, will stay in hospital for the entire weekend
  • His stay at King Edward VII Hospital in London is now his longest hospital stay
  • The duke had already spent 11 days in hospital in 2013 for an operation on the abdomen
  • He has now spent 12 days in hospital with the palace saying he is ‘at ease’

Prince Philip started his second weekend in hospital in what is now his longest stay as he battles an infection.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 99, was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London on Tuesday evening as a precaution after feeling unwell, and entered the building unaided.

Buckingham Palace said last Tuesday that Philip was ‘comfortable’ and ‘responding’ to medical help.

Her son Prince Edward also said this week that Philip was ‘much better’ but ‘looking forward to dating’ the royals kept their ‘fingers crossed’.

Today, the Duke has spent his longest stay in hospital as he continues to be treated for the infection for a 12th day.

He had previously spent 11 days in hospital in 2013 after surgery on his abdomen.

A royal source said yesterday she did not expect to provide any updates on the Duke until at least next week.

At the time of Philip’s admission to hospital, the palace did not disclose the reason, but then said on Tuesday that he was being treated for an infection.

Edward, who said he spoke to his father on the phone, suggested the Duke, who is known for his ‘no-fuss’ attitude, was a little frustrated at staying in the hospital.

The palace said on Tuesday: ‘The Duke of Edinburgh remains in King Edward VII Hospital where he is receiving medical treatment for an infection. He is comfortable and responding to treatment, but he should not be discharged from the hospital for several days.

Edward was asked about his father by Rhiannon Mills, royal correspondent for Sky News, as she filmed a separate interview with him at his Bagshot Park home in Surrey.

He replied, “ He’s doing a lot better, thank you very much, and he can’t wait to get out, which is the most positive thing, so we keep our fingers crossed. ”

When asked if Philip, who turns 100 in June, was frustrated with being in the hospital, Edward laughed and replied, “Just a little.

“ I think it touches us all, and then you can only look at the clock so many times and the walls are only so interesting.

“ We got brilliant and lovely messages from all kinds of people and we really appreciate that and he too, I passed them on. It’s fantastic, thank you.

Philip was initially scheduled to spend a few days under medical care for ‘observation and rest’, but last Friday it emerged that he was likely to remain in hospital this week.

Philip’s 11th day in hospital came when his grandson Prince Harry was interviewed by James Corden on the Late Late Show in America.

During their conversation, Harry revealed how Philip knows how to use Zoom – but just slams his laptop to end calls instead of pressing the Exit button.

The Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen have called the Sussexes on several occasions and even saw Archie ‘running around’, Harry added.

Prince Charles made a 200 mile round trip to see Philip in hospital last weekend, which royal experts said could have been to reassure the Duke of Harry and the lingering unrest caused by Megxit.

Charles’ surprise visit to Philip’s bedside on Saturday afternoon likely touched on ‘memorable’ events since his admission to hospital.
